Hardest game ever?

As someone who never played the PC version, maybe I'm at a particular disadvantage, but this game got to a point where it felt literally impossible to progress without a walk-thru guide. I mean, I won't post spoilers, but has anyone actually ever beaten this game without help? I spent about 40 hours wandering and figuring out minor puzzles by accident before giving up and finding this site.

Also, was the punishment for striking holy objects as severe in the original version? I swear, I dream about that Eye now...

That's a good question. I defeated the boss of the Mausoleum of the Giants without ever collecting the Grail. That's as far as I got before I started to "cheat".

It's very satisfying to figure things out on your own. On the other hand, it is also satisfying to explore and experience the entire content of a game. Sometimes, for us mere mortals, those desires conflict with each other.

I think that games like this are natural to play with a wiki, whether the developers agree or not. In the MSX era that inspired La-Mulana, and with the NES, SNES, as well as some PS1 games I remember, the game manual would include a notebook or just expect you to collect and take notes as you played through it. I like to think of the La-Mulana wiki as our notes, as we try to explore and dissect the game together. We don't feel bad about leaving cheap arcade gimmicks behind and we shouldn't expect people to take notes and discover information the way they did 30 years ago, either.

I'm going to just copy my response here to my profile page for future use. It's a common point of discussion.
